Cowdenbeath are set for a challenging third-round Scottish Cup tie against Highland League leaders, Brechin City.

Managed by former Hibs and St Johnstone player, Patrick Cregg, Brechin have only lost one league game this season.

They have won 14 league games and are seven points clear at the top of the table.

Cowdenbeath, however, are eager to advance to the fourth round of the national competition, which could help provide further funds.

Manager Dougie Hill, who has closely watched Brechin in two recent league matches, acknowledges the tough task ahead.

He said: "This is a very important game for the club, as a win could open the door to a lucrative fourth round tie.

"Brechin are a very useful team who have been leading the Highland League this season and we will have to produce the sort of form we did in the second round win at Spartans.

"Taking our chances, and defending solidly, will be so important, but we did just that at Spartans so the players know full well that they can produce what is needed."

Hill is optimistic about a strong squad for the tie, with only Ewan MacPherson and Aiden McLaughlin ruled out with long-term injuries.

He added: "Slowly but surely more players have recovered full fitness so barring any training injuries we should have a strong side for this important game.

"Having skipper Robbie McNab back playing has made a big difference to our resources and having his services along with Matty McDonald helps our midfield strengths.

"If we defend like we did against Spartans and Hearts B we can seek to engineer the win we want."

There is a strong Brechin connection within the Cowdenbeath coaching staff.

Hill spent four years playing for City, while assistant boss Paul McLean spent a decade at Glebe Park.

First-team coach Gary Fusco had eight seasons with City, and new goalkeeping coach Graeme Smith was also a Brechin player.
