COWDENBEATH will break new ground on Friday night when they travel to take on West of Scotland Premier League side, St Cadoc's, in the South Challenge Cup.

It will be the first time that the Blue Brazil have met the Glasgow-based outfit, who share Benburb FC's New Tinto Park, and who are 10th in their 16-team division.

Ahead of the third round tie, Dougie Hill is hopeful that his side can achieve their first shut-out of the season, after a 90th minute goal robbed them of a Lowland League win at Gretna on Saturday.

Cowden had led through a Rhys Walker strike right through to the closing seconds, at Raydale Park, when a little bit of slackness at a set piece allowed the home side to equalise.

"It was a pretty good performance at Gretna, with us creating a lot of chances but we only took one of them,” Hill commented.

"In the second half there were enough opportunities to secure all three points but, in the closing seconds, we got caught out and the chance of another league win disappeared.

"We really need to dig deeper late in games to defend leads and ensure wins for we desperately need the points to move up the table into the position we want to be in."

Hill also feels that his young players need to learn to convert the chances their good play create as, at Gretna, they had more than enough openings to win the game.

"Clearly this is something that comes with experience, but hopefully we can learn quickly as it would be good to turn pretty good overall performances into points,” he added.

"And, on Friday night, we will need to be at our best for they are a side who are well equipped in all departments, but clearly it is a tie I feel we can win and make the next round, for we want to make an impact in all cup competitions."

Striker Daryl Healy, who was unavailable last weekend, will be back for this one, but Ethan Kerr collected an arm injury in the first-half at Gretna and is unlikely to make Friday’s game.

Otherwise, the manager is expecting that injured full-back, Greg MacPherson, and midfielder, Aiden McLaughlin, will be back to full fitness in a couple of weeks.
