HILL OF BEATH HAWTHORN joined Cowdenbeath in reaching the second round of the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup with victory in the capital on Friday night.

However, fellow East of Scotland League, Premier Division side, Dundonald Bluebell, suffered penalty shoot-out heartbreak the following day against Highland League opposition.

Elsewhere, Crossgates Primrose moved into second in the First Division, whilst Lochgelly Albert remain top of Division Three, after both picked up victories on Saturday.

Tynecastle 2 Hill of Beath Hawthorn 3, Scottish Gas Scottish Cup, first round

HILL OF BEATH HAWTHORN set up a second round tie at home to Bo'ness United after overcoming Tynecastle on Friday evening.

As expected, Robbie Raeside had to work hard to earn the victory, but there was no denying them a place in the hat for Sunday's draw.

The Haws started the match positively, creating a few good openings, with a Jake Mitchell header bringing out a good save from the home goalkeeper.

They were rewarded in the 24th minute when Dan Watt slotted home the opening goal after Jordan Tosh provided the key pass, and the visitors fashioned other opportunities before the break.

Tynecastle, however, also showed they were capable of putting together some good moves before the half-time whistle, at which one goal separated the teams.

After the restart, the Haws went looking for a second goal and, within 60 seconds, they got it when John Smith cut inside and finished well.

The hosts came back into the game and, on the hour, pulled a goal back through Scott Jardine, after Hill of Beath failed to deal with a long throw-in.

Raeside's men, however, always looked the likelier side to add to their tally and, five minutes later, they restored their two-goal advantage when Tosh fired home from Joe Kinninmonth's diagonal pass.

Although Sean Watt tapped in at the far post for Tynecastle's second goal with eight minutes left, the Haws saw the game out to advance into round two.

Raeside commented: "We maybe could have dealt better with both their goals, but it was a pretty good performance with some excellent finishing and now we can look forward to a home second round Scottish Cup tie with Lowland League side Bo'ness United."

The tie will be played over the weekend of Saturday October 26.

Dundonald Bluebell 1 Inverurie Loco Works 1 (after extra time, Inverurie win 3-0 on penalties), Scottish Gas Scottish Cup, first round

DUNDONALD BLUEBELL suffered heartbreak from the penalty spot as Highland League Inverurie Loco Works squeezed into round two.

Jason Dair's men were knocked out of the competition on penalties after the teams couldn't be separated after 120 minutes at Moorside.

Strong defensive work by the visitors helped them find a way through the tie, the first of which saw Bluebell on top.

They had a couple of decent chances but, on the half hour, they fell behind when Paul Coutts powerfully headed home Calum Dingwall's free-kick from around eight yards out.

In the second period, Dundonald continued to play the better football, but the Inverurie defensive work kept them in the lead until in the 70th minute, when Corey Battrick produced a good pass for Sam Ellis to fire home from 10 yards out.

Locos defended in depth to take the game into extra-time, where there were few openings for either side, and the tie went into the shoot-out stage.

It was here the Loco ‘keeper came to the party to make two good saves, and the other ‘Bell shot hit the bar and stayed out, while three spot-kicks were converted by the visitors to give them the tie.

Dair felt his team did well enough against physically strong opponents, who sit third in the Highland League, commenting: "Once we got the equaliser we were the more likely team to get a second, but they defended in depth and managed to keep us out.

"It is always frustrating to lose in a penalty shoot-out, but I felt we played the better football throughout the game."

Leith Athletic 1 Crossgates Primrose 4, East of Scotland League, First Division

SCOTT HYND continued his red-hot scoring streak by bagging a hat-trick to help Crossgates Primrose move level on points with First Division leaders Camelon Juniors.

The in-form forward took his tally to 12 goals in 10 matches as Alan Campbell's men secured their fifth league win in a row with a fine success at Leith Athletic.

Craig Henderson gave them an eighth minute lead at Meadowbank Stadium, which they quickly doubled 10 minutes later through Hynd.

The visitors went into the interval two goals to the good but, with an hour on the clock, Jack Egan pulled one back for Leith.

However, just three minutes later, Crossgates restored their two-goal advantage from the penalty spot, with Hynd converting, and he completed his treble with 19 minutes to go to seal victory.

With 19 points from eight matches, Primrose are only behind early pacesetters Camelon on goal difference.

Lochgelly Albert 3 Newburgh 2, East of Scotland League, Third Division

LOCHGELLY ALBERT strengthened their position at the top of the Third Division with a hard-earned win over mid-table Newburgh.

The visitors grabbed a ninth minute lead when some poor defending allowed Logan Whyte to open the scoring, but were then thankful that the woodwork prevented Kieran Boundy from equalising.

The same player, however, played a key role in the Berts' leveller when he was hauled down inside the box for a penalty, which Scott Russell converted, before Dylan Geddes struck the Newburgh bar.

Although the ball appeared to cross the line, the referee was unsighted, and the teams went in level at the break.

Nine minutes into the second half, Mitchell Sharp put Newburgh ahead for a second time but, moments later, Russell again converted a penalty, after Owen Dews had been fouled, and Cammy Newsome was red-carded.

Lochgelly went in search for a winner and, with 13 minutes to go, they got it when Geddes found the net after a goalmouth scramble, putting them onto 19 points, three clear at the summit.

Berts committee man, Derek Patrick, said: "Newburgh are a bit of a bogey team for us and we were maybe a little careless at both their goals, but we again created a lot of chances and the win sets us up for an interesting game against fourth top Linton Hotspur at Purvis Park this weekend."

Lochore Welfare 2 Kirkcaldy and Dysart 4, Alex Jack Cup, third round

LOCHORE WELFARE were knocked out of the Alex Jack Cup after a late Kirkcaldy and Dysart fightback saw them recover from a two-goal deficit.

Three goals in eight minutes for the visitors sent them through in this third round tie at Central Park, after the hosts had found themselves in a strong position at half-time.

James Adam's men took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to Logan Donaldson's quality finish, and, after fashioning further chances, Lucas Reilly added a second for the Welfare a minute before the interval.

Two minutes into the second half, Kirkcaldy and Dysart pulled one back from a penalty by on-loan Kelty Hearts forward, Finlay Shearer, but Lochore had chances to stretch their lead.

They didn't take them, and they were made to pay for it in the closing stages.

With four minutes to go, Shearer equalised when Ethan Anderson tried to user a through ball out of play, but was robbed, before Jack Wilson took advantage of space in the Welfare box to put the away side ahead in stoppage time.

Shearer then completed his hat-trick to put the seal on Kirkcaldy and Dysart's win, and Adam said: "We were by far the better side in the first half, but in the second period we fell out of the game.

"It looked like we were going to hold on until that late incident which saw us lose possession at a key moment, and then they went on to get a fourth."
