ALBION ROVERS 3 COWDENBEATH 4
SPFL Trust Trophy - Second Round
COWDEN made a dramatic second-half fight-back at Cliftonhill last night (Tuesday) to make round three of the SPFL Trophy.
A goal down at the break, Cowdenbeath came roaring back in the second period and a late winner from player/assistant manager, Paul McLean, delighted the good travelling support.
Blues boss, Dougie Hill, relied on the team which beat Gala Fairydean for this one, but they went behind in 22 minutes when Albion’s Alan Reid headed the home side ahead.
Jamie Docherty came closest to levelling things, but the visitors were behind at the interval, then in 58 minutes Cowdenbeath were level when Rovers’, Alan Fernie sent the ball past his own ‘keeper trying to keep a visiting raid out.
Then six minutes later the Blue Brazil took the lead when sub Jake Sutherland took a pass from Sam Newman and fired home from six yards out.
However, Rovers were not for lying down and within two minutes the scores were again level when Adam Fernie set up Paul Kennedy, who finished well, then two minutes later Rovers’ Bright Prince was fouled in the Cowden box but Kennedy’s spot-kick was saved by Josh Blair, his second penalty save in two games.
However, Kennedy made amends in 68 minutes when the visiting defence was caught out and the home attacker made it 3-2.
Cowden were soon back on the attack and with seven minutes to go substitute, Greg MacPherson was hauled down in the Rovers’ box and Docherty levelled the game from the spot, then five minutes later Paul McLean grabbed the winner with a header from a Docherty cross.
Cowdenbeath: Blair, Dunsmore, Newman (Kerr 71), McLean, Denham, McNab, Whyte, Burke (G MacPherson, 63 Jordan 93), Healy, Docherty, Walker (Sutherland 64). Sub not used, Guiney.
