DUE to the recent fire at the Mildenhall Oval, the Saloon British Championship has been cancelled and, as a result, the grid for the World Championship at the Cowdenbeath Racewall at the end of this month is basically known, writes our Racewall reporter, Jim Turner.
Starting from pole position is one of the Scottish hopes, Stuart Shevill Jnr, but he has Bradley Compton-Sage alongside.
Behind are Archie Brown and Ryan Santry, whilst Michael Allard and Aaron Totham are on row three. Of the other Scottish drivers who have qualified, Ross Watters starts from the inside of row five, Barry Russell inside row eight, Zak Gilmour the outside of row eleven, Graeme Shevill inside of row twelve, with Jordan Cassie directly behind him.
Amongst the reserves are Ian McLaughlin and Kai Gilmour and if there are no withdrawls they will race in the last chance qualifying race where there could be up to thirteen Scottish drivers vying for the six places available on the back of the grid.
The strong wind had basically died down before the stock car meeting started, on Saturday, and with a dry track the drivers revelled providing some exciting racing. There were wins for Jason Blacklock, Scott Turner Jnr and Jaxson Watters, with the drivers winning the Turner Trophy in their respective formulae whilst Paul Barron won all three Prostock races.
Amongst those racing for the Formula II Turner Trophy was the defending winner, Chris Burgoyne, but he had World Champion Gordon Moodie to contend with along with Liam Rennie and Jason McDonald. Aaron Vaight was a welcome visitor with nineteen cars in fast and exciting racing.
Charlie Faichney led the field away but soon fell into the clutches of Paul Reid and Jason Blacklock. It was the latter who took the lead, but having made a lightning start Gordon Moodie took the lead during the closing stages of the race. Once ahead he went on to win from John Hogg and Chris Burgoyne.
The second heat had Faichney the early leader but again he lost out to Blacklock. This time it was Lewis Burgoyne who led the chasing group but not long after he got ahead than he had Moodie in close order. During the closing stages of the race Moodie took the lead and went on to his second win of the night finishing ahead of Hogg and L Burgoyne.
Blacklock led the Turner Trophy Final away, after a random draw within grade, with Brian Hogg slotting into second. Aaron Vaight was the first of the red graders to show but was soon overhauled by L. Burgoyne.
Blacklock meanwhile had extended his lead and was well clear of B. Hogg by the time a charge from further back arrived from Ryan McGill, L. Burgoyne with Moodie not that far back. As the lap boards appeared Blacklock was still clear although L. Burgoyne was starting to close.
A nail-biting last couple of laps saw Blacklock just out of reach on the last bend as he went on to win ahead of L. Burgoyne and Moodie.
The Grand National was won by L. Burgoyne from McGill and Moodie but Blacklock wasn’t classified at the close.
The Prostock Basics welcomed Scott Turner Jnr to their ranks, but the defending holder of the shield, Dylan Chisholm had moved to Saloons.
The opening heat was led away by Amy Easton, but a lap later Mark Blackie Jnr was ahead. Making inroads through the field was Liam Boyle, and once he took the lead he went on to win from Kai Chisholm and Callum Rennie.
Turner Jnr led the field away for heat 2 but within a couple of laps Taylor Osborne was ahead but had Galloway and Chisholm in close order.
As the race progressed, they were joined by Lauren Ford, Joanne Hilditch, Boyle and Colin Ogilvie. Boyle glanced the wall and slowed, Galloway got alongside Osborne but on the run up to the flag Osborne, running on the outside line, got ahead to win from Chisholm and Callum Rennie.
Turner Jnr led off the Turner Trophy Final with Blackie Jnr and Osborne dicing over second place. As Osborne made her way into second Chisholm made the move into third, although Turner Jnr was clear in the lead.
Rennie was the first star grader to show but was overhauled by Boyle as he began to fall down the pack. There was to be no catching Turner Jnr, however, as he went on to pick up the win on his debut with Osborne just clear of Chisholm as they crossed the line.
Amongst the Prostock drivers racing were newcomers Shaun Mitchell and Greig Clarke. Mitchell was the early leader but next time around Chris Mack led. There was a race suspension, but within a couple of laps Paul Barron was ahead of Grady Ross. In the end Barron won from Ross and Callum McIvor.
Clarke led the field away but was soon caught by Mack, but Barron and Ross were nose to tail and making progress. Ross slowed with Barron catching first John Mason then Mack to take the lead with a lap to run to pick up his second win of the night. Mack held onto second with Mason third.
Mitchell was the early final leader chased by Mack. It took Mack until half distance to get into the lead but by then Barron was in third. He got ahead of Mason then into the lead with a couple of laps remaining to make it three wins in a row. Mack held onto second with Mason third.
The Micro F2 drivers turned out in their numbers with Elliott Royal hoping to take away the trophy he won last year.
The opening race saw Jaxson Watters go straight into the lead, but was soon joined by Evah Adsley and Harry Yule.
They were then joined by Rhys Walker and Evie McLellan. As the race progressed Oakley Grief joined in but he and Adsley tangled and he spun. In the end Walker just took the lead on the last bend to win from Watters and Yule.
The second heat was another cracking race with Watters leading but he was to be closed down by Yule with Adsley not that far adrift. Grief was closing and got ahead of Adsley whilst Yule moved into the lead.
Corey Mathers and Naomi Bain tangled and dropped away. Once ahead Yule went on to win from Watters and Grief.
Watters led the Turner Trophy race away with Adsley and Yule in hot pursuit. The trio ran nose to tail for a few laps until a tangle between Adsley and Yule left Watters clear. The battle for second was on between Evie McLellan, Grief and Mathers, but Watters went on to take a clear win ahead of Mathers and Grief, while Jake Ramage was awarded Driver of the Day.
The Hot Saloons were down from Crimond for another outing. Darren Traves led when the race started and had Jamie Richardson chasing, but it wasn't until the closing stages that they swapped places with Kevin Gordon third. Traves was the early heat two leader from Mark Forbes and Richardson, but when he took over the lead places they ran in close order. Forbes went on to win from Richardson and Traves. The third heat was won by Richardson from Forbes with Traves third.
This week the Formula II drivers return and are joined by the ORCi Stock Rod and Ministox drivers, who are racing for their Turner Trophy. The fourth formula is the youngsters in the Micro F2s. The meeting starts at 6pm.
