THE wet weather of the end of last week saw three of Saturday’s four East of Scotland games postponed, with the matches involving Hill of Beath Hawthorn, Lochore Welfare and Lochgelly Albert put off.
The only local game on was Crossgates Primrose’s East of Scotland League Cup second round tie with fellow Premier League side, Tynescastle, at Meggetland.
Tynecastle 0, Crossgates Primrose 2.
AFTER an indifferent run in the league, this was a much better performance from the Primrose.
Tynecastle won in a league game, at Humbug Park, last weekend but the Primrose, despite being without a few regulars, worked really hard and posed problems for the home side from the first whistle.
There were a few openings for Primrose, with Joe Kinninmonth posing the hosts problems in wide areas, and Archie Campbell and Ross Philp threatened for them.
Tynecastle did come back at Crossgates though, and Primrose ‘keeper, Miko Kimocki, made a couple of good saves and at the break the scoreline was blank.
Crossgates were reduced to ten men, eight minutes into the second period, with a second yellow card, but it did not stop them looking for a goal.
The opener came after 69 minutes, from young Alex Barnett, with a neat piece of finishing, but Tynecastle came back at them and the visitors had to defend solidly.
Crossgates wanted a second and it came with five minutes to go when substitute Craig McGuire slipped home what really proved to be the strike which put the game out of reach of the hosts.
Their frustration boiled over three minutes later when a horrible foul in the middle of the park, saw a straight red card produced by the referee and that ended the home challenge.
So Crossgates are now in the third round of the East of Scotland League Cup, but will be seeking points from their coming Premier League fixtures to move nearer safety.
Saturday’s fixtures: East of Scotland Premier Division - Hill of Beath Hawthorn v Penicuik Athletic 2.30pm, Crossgates Primrose v Haddington Athletic 2.30pm, Hutchie Vale v Dundonald Bluebell 3pm. East of Scotland First Division - Lochore Welfare v Preston Athletic 2.30pm. Third Division - Fauldhouse United v Lochgelly Albert 2.30pm.
