THE situation whereby Fife Council is planning to serve free meals to families in each community during the summer school holidays seems to tell a real story of our area.

I can remember a story in the Times around Easter time about free meals being served to needy families during that holiday.

However, for it to last for a total of seven weeks will be a marathon effort and no doubt will cost the council a lot of money.

Clearly there are a lot of people who are struggling, if there weren't then the food banks in Cowdenbeath and Benarty would not be so busy.

But surely this must spell things out about the effect of the revamped benefits system, it has to be taking its toll.

Our local MP, Lesley Laird has been trying to get the Westminster Social Security system to visit the area and take on board the problems being experienced by people in the constituency with Universal Credit.

I don't think she has had any luck yet though and that means that Ms Rudd is likely to come to our area soon.

The problem, however, is being cruelly exposed by the amount of free meals that are going to be needed to be served in the summer school break.

I would hope that Lesley Laird gets a tally of how many are needed and then sends the information to Westminster, anything is worth trying, but it will be a statistic which I hope is made public knowledge.
