Over 7,000 food parcels were distributed across Fife from April to September this year.

The statistics from Trussell Trust show that 7,577 food parcels were distributed across Fife over those months across nine locations.

In the Cowdenbeath and Kirkcaldy constituency 1,345 food parcels were given out in the same timeframe this year. A total of 462 parcels were given out for children.

This was an increase from the same time in 2023, when 1,274 parcels were given out. For children, the number of parcels was at 432.

Trussell has revealed that its community of food banks has distributed more than 122,000 food parcels between April and September in Scotland.

The charity has now called on the UK and Scottish governments to take decisive action on this issue.

Penny Morriss, head of Scotland at Trussell, said: “The sheer numbers of people still facing hunger and hardship across Scotland is heartbreaking.

“This cannot go on and we refuse to stand by while so many of us are pushed to the brink, left without enough money to live on.

“The UK government was elected with a manifesto pledge to end the need for emergency food and the time to act is now. The Scottish Government also has a vital role to play, using all its powers to bring about positive change in Scotland.

“That’s why we are urgently calling on both to plan urgent and decisive action to end hunger once and for all.”
