CARDENDEN'S annual bonfire and fireworks display will continue despite the chairman of the committee standing down more than 30 years after helping to start the event.

And they'll keep it in the family with Alex Burns MBE confirming that his grandsons are set to step up and ensure the big day remains as a stand-out in the village calendar.

There's still strong support with around 4,500 people of all ages attending the bonfire and fireworks display in Wallsgreen Park on a perfect evening.

DJ Kenny McGurk kept the crowds entertained before the big bangs got underway at 6.30pm when local councillors Linda Erskine, Rosemary Liewald and Lea McLelland lit the bonfire.

At the event it was announced that the 2024 display would be the last for Alex as chairman.

As he approaches his 80th birthday he felt it was the appropriate time to stand down and let younger people get involved in one of Fife’s finest community bonfire events.

He told the Times: “It was a tremendous night in every way, with perfect weather conditions and a fantastic crowd.

“It is only possible through the tremendous support the organising committee receives from so many volunteers, and also the efforts put in by these hard-working people themselves.”

Alex said he was proud that his three grandsons are now part of the hard-working committee and he hopes that more younger people will get involved in organising the 2025 bonfire and fireworks display.

He added: “I would also like to thank Margaret King, at the Bowhill Centre, who has been a real stalwart to me over the years ensuring that we get everything right every year for our huge community event.”
