LOCHGELLY WILL be holding a special centenary Remembrance Day service this Sunday (November 10).

This year marks the 100th since the war memorial was unveiled, as well as this, descendants of the woman who unveiled the memorial all those years ago, will be in attendance at the event.

Cllr Linda Erskine said: “We are quite lucky as well because Mrs Hynes, who unveiled the memorial in 1924, she was a Lochgelly lady who lost three of her sons in the first world war.

“So she was asked to unveil the monument, four of her descendants will be at the memorial.”

The Lord-Lieutenant will also be in attendance alongside Jim Leishman to take the parade salute. Lochgelly Pipe Band and Lochgelly Band will be at the event and local schools will be represented and lay wreaths.

There will be hot drinks and food served in the town hall after the event.

Cllr Erskine added: “Although it’s Lochgelly people travel back to their home towns for services of remembrance.

"My great-grandfather was injured in the First World War in 1915; he was sent home and he ended up working as an engine driver in the railways for the rest of the war. My grandfather fought in Burma.”

Lochgelly High School will also be marking the occasion with ‘A Night to Remember’ at the school. Pupils have been working on projects about the memorial, headed by Miss Abbie.
