THURSDAY September 12 was another special day at Beath High as the school hosted its annual Senior Awards Ceremony, writes Damian Grierson.
This was a celebration not just of the outstanding work done by many of the pupils over the last academic year, but also of the musical talent of its young people.
The ceremony started with a rousing bagpipe performance by Matthew Clements, followed up by a heartfelt welcome from this year’s school captains, McKenzie Easton and Jack Thompson.
Each spoke about the positive impact that Beath High has had on their lives, and singled out faculties and teachers that have inspired them.
Casey King delivered a stunning rendition of 'Loch Lomond' before the guest speaker of the night was introduced.
Maria Lloyd, head of education and children’s services for secondary schools at Fife Council, addressed the prize winners, elegantly weaving in Beath’s values to highlight the unique opportunities they will enjoy at school, and urging them to make the most of them.
For 'Belonging', she highlighted the relationships and social life that form the heart of a child’s experience at school;
'Experiences' are the lessons, clubs, extra-curricular activities and trips that stay with pupils for a lifetime, building resilience and character;
'Aspiration' is about never settling for less than one’s best, and attainment that reflects the effort expended;
'Teamwork' is reflected by Beath’s strong sporting heritage, and the pupil power demonstrated through collaboration, exemplified by the school meal improvement initiative led by pupils, and which has received attention from the Scottish Government;
and 'Honesty' as an opportunity for pupils to embrace who they truly are, in terms of opinions, religion, sexuality, and to respect others’ right to do likewise.
Between the many awards presented, including the dux which was awarded to David Buik, and the Rector’s Quaich, presented to Luke Fleming in recognition of his tireless work in the community, there were other beautiful musical performances.
Naomi Berry sang 'Out Here on My Own', a vocal group comprising pupils from every year group performed 'True Colours', and Millen Simpson rounded off the evening by singing 'Stay'.
It was a truly special evening, showcasing and rewarding the hard work of Beath High School’s exceptional pupils.
