The new owner of a popular Cowdenbeath pub has praised the mentorship of its long-serving departing landlady.
Located on Hill Street, the Glen Tavern is described as a community hub for the town’s residents.
Previous owner Anne Keenan said: “We’ll still be in touch with all the regulars because they’re not just clientele, they’re friends too. If somebody doesn’t turn up on a day that they normally come in you’re worried and concerned about them."
“I’ve been here 22 years, and it feels like double that time because it’s non-stop as you can imagine. It’s time to hang up my glasses now.”
“I’ve got a lot of good memories here, and a lot of sad times as well. We’ve lost people through illness but we’ve all been there together to lean on one another’s shoulders.
New owner, Christine Mill said: “I could never have done this without Anne and Willie. It’s not like just buying somewhere and getting the keys, they’re helping out every step of the way and I can’t thank them enough. The friendship that we’ve got will last for life. Everything you ask they just go over and above.
Currently a Ballingry resident, Miss Mill plans to move into the flat above the pub. She said: “My father’s from Cowdenbeath and I know the area quite well. I’ve been away a bit living in Perth but I’m like a bit of a boomerang, I keep coming back.”
“I love my job. When you walk through that door the world is left behind and you can have a good time after working all week.
“You make so many friends so quickly running a pub. Sometimes the people that you see are the only ones you talk to all day.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been working my socks off in here doing double shifts day in day out, but if you love it and it’s your passion then it’s not just a job. It’s hectic but exciting.”
Speaking about the reception she’s received from the local community, Miss Mill said: “The phones just never stopped. We’re getting a lot of messages of support even from people I’ve not seen in years, so it’s good vibes.
“The owners of the woodside, staff of Wee Jimmy’s and Cross Guns, they’ve all sent me their best wishes.
“We’re looking forward to the big opening event on the 5th. It’ll be a country night, and we’ve even got a bucking bronco. We’re already expecting around 150 people.”
