A PRIMARY school in Cowdenbeath is preparing to launch a new community lounge.
Being opened as part of a Macmillan Coffee morning, the new lounge at St. Brides Primary School is being launched to help improve parental engagement at the school.
Named Sainty’s Snug Launch, the opening event will be on September 27. It will be an opportunity for parents to make a donation to Macmillan and to have cake and hot drinks with other parents.
Jill Logan, a teacher at the school, said: “It’s a whole school initiative this year and we are wanting more opportunities to welcome parents and carers, grandparents, into the school, just to get them more involved in learning and to make more of a community feel.”
The lounge will have a uniform swap shop in it, and parents, guardians, and pupils were able to make suggestions for what they would like to take place in Sainty’s Snug.
“A lot of them [the ideas] will hopefully be taken forward. One was cooking classes but we might have to do that in a slightly different space.

“I think most of them are quite realistic and there’s a good sort of buzz about it.
“The coffee morning was by far the biggest thing, people wanted to come into the school and speak to other parents.” Jill commented.
On the day of the launch, two of the school’s Mini Vinnie pupils will be making a speech. This will be followed by a song from the primary six class, a speech from the headteacher, Jo-Anne Angel, and then ribbon cutting by pupil support officer at St Columba’s High School, Kelly Thomson.
The Mini Vinnies are eight children in primary four to seven, who are part of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and follow his gospel values of helping the poor, sick, and elderly in the local community and giving them hope.
The event will be finished by a song from the primary two/three class and a chance to mingle.
Jill added: “It’s going to be there for years. It’s been a real sort of positive journey so far, it’s been great getting the wider community involved.
“Everyone seems really excited about it.”
