THERE'S an additional £6 million to fix potholes and provide smoother journeys across the Kingdom.
As previously reported by the Times, calls were made for the Scottish Government to invest more in the roads, after figures revealed that it would cost the council more than £100m to tackle the backlog across Fife.
Alex Rowley, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, accused Holyrood of “letting Fife’s roads crumble.”
A freedom of information request revealed the pothole repair bills for each local authority in Scotland, with Fife’s sitting well above the nine-figure mark.
The Scottish Government insisted that road repairs and maintenance is the responsibility of the local authorities, allocating Fife Council £875m to fund local services which includes roadworks.
Now, councillor Altany Craik, roads spokesperson for the council, has insisted that the local authority is fighting a tight budget amid trying to repair the roads.
He said: “There’s over 2,500km of roads in Fife which we maintain and keep in a safe condition.
“We understand and share the frustration of Fife’s road users, who might be delayed by roadworks.
“We work hard all year round to improve our road network, not just by repairing defects, but with wider infrastructure projects such as Bothwell Gardens (in Dunfermline) which supports the future expansion and economic growth of the area.
“Across the council, our budgets continue to be challenged and we have to allocate our resources carefully.”

Cllr Craik continued: “Since April, we’ve already spent £4.5m helping to fix Fife’s roads and this is projected to increase to £10.5m by the end of the financial year which includes an additional £3.5m as part of our commitment to make our roads better.”
