A PROBE has been launched after a fire took place at a Central Fife primary school.

Emergency services were called to Lumphinnans Primary on Sunday morning after the incident.

A post on the school's Facebook page said a "series of small fires" had been set underneath the school in the basement spaces.

"Janitorial staff, fire service and police all acted promptly to prevent any significant damage to the building," it added.

"We are working closely with Fife Council to resolve all damage caused and plan to open on Wednesday as scheduled.

"Any information surrounding those responsible for the damage should be provided to Police Scotland.

"We want to thank the Lumphinnans community for their ongoing support."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said they were called at around 11.35am to a report of a fire at a school on Main Street.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. No one was injured," they added. "Enquiries are ongoing.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said they were called at 11.37am on Sunday to reports of a small rubbish fire in the basement of a building on Main Street.

"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the area where crews extinguished the fire and made the area safe before leaving the scene," they said.

"There were no reported casualties."

Fife Council's executive director for education Donald Macleod added: “Sadly, I can confirm there was a fire within Lumphinnans PS yesterday. Police Scotland and the fire service attended and the fire was fully extinguished.

"Police are now investigating this incident.

“Staff are working hard to make sure the school is cleaned and ready for the children to return on Wednesday.”

This weekend's incident follows a blaze back in February this year, in which a literacy shed in the school's nursery garden was destroyed.
