PLANS to build 47 affordable homes in Lochgelly have been given the green light.

Kingdom Housing Association had applied for permission for the development – which will include six houses, 41 flats and two ground floor retail units – on the former Fabtek site situated south of Hall Street.

The flatted accommodation will be build across seven blocks and range from two to three storeys while the houses will be two storeys.

The site will use an existing access from Hall Street and off-street parking is to be provided throughout the site using communal parking courts.

Fife Council planner Jamie Penman said the proposals were in compliance with recommended policies.

"The application proposal would result in the sustainable reuse of a large, vacant and derelict brownfield site, which is located close to the centre of Lochgelly," he said.

"The design and layout of the site will greatly improve the appearance of the surrounding area and realise the development of a long term allocated site.

"The central location of the application property would facilitate local living which would help reduce the reliance on the private car."
