Kelty Community Cinema is preparing to celebrate their 100th screening later this year.

The local group will be marking the milestone this September after forming in 2016.

They started screening a year later, and Kelty had its first inaugural film festival in 2018.

For its 100th screening, the community cinema will be showing Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr (1924).

It is a silent movie that will be accompanied by live music to play along with the film.

Wayne Hayles, convenor, said: “When I first joined the community cinema I wasn’t running it back then, it was Carol and Graham.

“When I joined, I was very passionate about it. I hoped we would get to this point.”

Screenings tend to regularly have around 30 people attending, with the cinema’s Christmas screenings being its most popular.

They show films to suit all ages from Lilo & Stitch for youngsters, to Mrs Harris Goes to Paris for adults.

Wayne added: “We do try to mix it up as much as we can.

“We have movies for every age group.”

In 2020, the cinema received top of the range equipment from Creative Scotland (Cruthachail Alba) and had their programme funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.

In 2023, they then raised nearly £1,500 from Co-op members through the Local Community Fund.

The cinema also launched a borrow a movie initiative back in 2022.

Wayne and his wife, Donna, offered their movie collection to the community in response to the rising cost of living.

Kelty did used to have its own cinema with its roots going back to the Gothenburg Picture House, and then in 1939 Regal Cinema opened its doors to the public.

However, this was demolished in 1993.

Wayne still sees potential for a mainstream cinema in the Fife village.

“What I would like for Kelty is to have a cinema like they used to have," he said.

"They screened movies for the people of the area.

“I would like to have a premises of our own again and have a mainstream cinema."

Kelty Community Cinema is volunteer-led and they are always keen to hear from people who would like to help out.
