KELTY's mining heritage will be celebrated at the village's annual children's gala on Saturday.

The theme of the event will provide a nod to years gone with the day also including more traditional activities.

Committee chairperson Jasmine Rapson explained: "The gala has been going on in Kelty for 135 years.

"Years and years ago, they used to do children's races on the gala day but that has not been done for a long time. We have brought it back this year and it is going to be more of a traditional gala.

"We have got races, a tug of war and then we have got all the usual fairground rides and the free zone for the children with inflatables and other attractions.

"We have got the Kelty Street Art group doing free face painting and we have hair braiding as well.

"Our theme this year for the parade is Kelty's mining heritage. It is really nice to celebrate what the village came from."

This year's event is the first for the almost brand new committee who took over the organising to ensure a gala would take place.

"Last year everyone on the committee stepped down apart from our treasurer so there was a risk of there not being a gala if people didn't step up," added Jasmine.

"So we had a lot of figuring out of what we had to do.

"We have got our treasurer Helen who has been doing it for 24 years. Without her it wouldn't have been possible."

The parade starts at midday from Kelty Industrial Estate and will head down Cocklaw Street, along Main Street and Bath Street before arriving at the park.
