NEALE Hanvey, MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, has revealed over £100,000 in financial wins for his constituents.

The Alba politician and his team have helped a number of people in his ward to reclaim vital funds during the cost-of-living crisis.

In total they have managed to win back a whopping £102,325.

He told the Times: "We've had people who have had DWP (Department of Work and Pensions) withdraw funds that were apparently incorrectly paid to them.

"These are folks with very little money as it is and any sort of clawback would have been significant for them.

"We've supported people through that kind of claim and we've been able to demonstrate that the recovery of that was wrong and that the person was actually entitled to that benefit.

"Other things that we've done, we've had a couple who had paid in a substantial amount of money, I think it was about £10,000 each, into a scheme that ended up being ruled as unlawful by the financial services authority.

"We worked to recover that money for them and we got that money back."

On top of that, the team was able to recover money for a person who inherited their partner's debt.

Mr Hanvey continued: "That's just a flavour of it, we've had lots of other small victories, we're not talking about £10 and £20 here but hundreds of pounds on various different issues.

"It's a real cross-section of the casework activity and we just decided to keep tabs on it because it was something that gave us all a great deal of satisfaction.

"When we got a financial win it was something that we celebrated at our weekly meeting with our caseworkers and some of it was a real punch the air kind of thing.

"I think it was mid-pandemic that we started to keep a record and we've kept it going since.

"To some people £10,000 is an astronomical amount and to others it's the balance in one of their savings accounts, but to lose £10,000 and it is your life savings that you were counting on, and you think it's gone forever, the feeling that you get when you recover that for someone is just so satisfying.

"It really is just wonderful and it's one of the great things about doing this job."

Mr Hanvey's main goal is to ensure that people in his constituency know that they can reach out for help if they need it.

He added: "It's a call to people who are maybe struggling financially in the constituency, to people who are maybe in these circumstances that I've set out, that they can come to me and we will do everything we can to help."
