WORK to improve the condition of Cowdenbeath Cemetery is set to take place.

Councillor Darren Watt, who represents the area, had received complaints from "several" residents who raised concerns about overgrown grass and fallen headstones.

He told the Times: "Cowdenbeath Cemetery is very much more like a public park.

"A lot of people have family and friends there and are up there more often, it is not just Mothers Day or Christmas Day, it's weekly.

"They would know better than most."

He said there are cemetery improvements planned by Fife Council and that headstone inspections in the region are ongoing.

"Some headstones are not maintained any more by family or friends.

"The council is making sure they are fit for purpose, any which are not safe are laid down flat with a hope to put them back in the right position."

Liz Murphy, Fife Council's bereavement services manager said: "We work hard to make sure all our cemeteries are clean and tidy for visitors.

"The grass at Cowdenbeath is due to be cut soon as part of the scheduled maintenance we carry out.

"We also inspect headstones to make sure they're safe.

"Unless we're asked to leave a fallen memorial lying flat, they'll be dug in into the ground in an upright position, so that they are secure.

"If anyone has any concerns about a headstone, they can report it to us at bereavement.services@fife.gov.uk"
