KELTY Hearts have been crowned League Two champions after Ukraine’s Max Kucheriavyi headed home a late winner against Stenhousemuir.
There were tears of joy from some in the Kelty support after witnessing an historic moment before their eyes at New Central Park this afternoon.
Kelty knew they had to win to have any chance of clinching promotion to League One today, with nearest rivals Annan Athletic hosting Albion Rovers in a match they could not afford to lose.
Kelty and Stenhousemuir were locked in a goalless stalemate at half-time, but Albion Rovers were pulling off a shock at Galabank as they held a 2-1 lead.
Annan responded to level matters, and it looked as though Kevin Thomson’s side would have to wait until next Friday to have the chance to celebrate championship glory.
However, football magic then presented itself.
Michael Tidser’s teasing delivery into the box was met by Kucheriavyi on 84 minutes. At the same time, miles away, Albion Rovers snuck back in front at Annan. Two moments that could only have been seconds apart.
Kelty’s players swarmed their Ukrainian teammate for what would prove to be the winner ahead of New Central Park erupting at the full-time whistle.
