NEXT Saturday (August 10) a bit of Cowdenbeath FC's history will be recalled as the upstairs area in the new stand at Central Park is re-named the Andy Matthew Lounge.
In November 1972, Cowdenbeath chairman Charlie Gronbach presided over the opening of the Cowdenbeath Development Club, adjacent to the entrance to Central Park (now the Shimla Palace Restaurants).
It had been built at a cost of £38,500 and the new club’s lounge was then named the Andy Matthew Lounge in honour of the then club manager Andy who had taken the club into the top flight in 1970.
The Development Club though foundered after a few years.
Said club director David Allan: "On August 10, the new Andy Matthew Lounge, at Central Park, is being officially opened in the presence of members of the Matthew family and players from that great era of around 50 years ago. "All season ticket-holders are cordially invited to attend the opening ceremony in the upstairs lounge at Central Park – the actual ceremony will take place round about, 2pm but please look in and enjoy a drink before hand as the bar will be open from 1pm."
Our picture shows Andy Matthew and his Cowden team celebrating their promotion success in 1970.
Season tickets are of course still available from Central Park and as well as discounted entry to every League game they provide a range of other attractive benefits.
