THE Cowdenbeath Social History film project is really taking shape.

Anim8s artists, Martin and Andrew, have been meeting with local people, recording and filming people’s stories and gathering all kinds of images and information.

"We’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone who has helped us out so far!," said Martin Ayres.

Over the coming months Fife-based arts group Anim8s will be uncovering some of the people, places and stories that have made the town what it is today.

The aim is to make up to 20 short films about key individuals, businesses and organisations who have made a contribution to the life of the town known in its heyday as the Chicago of Fife. The films will be available to be viewed by locals and visitors using plaques placed at key spots around the town and on a specially designated website.

Added Martin: "We’ve been asking people’s help with various themes on a weekly basis.

"This week’s theme is the celebrations that have taken place in the town for many years with a particular focus on the old Miners’ Treats, Store Treats and Galas.

"There is a rich tradition of these events in Cowdenbeath and we think that’s a story worth telling.

"This year’s Civic Week and the Gala Day with its Mardi Gras theme was a great success, another great celebration fit for a Gala Queen! What we’d like is to uncover some of the people and stories that made the treats and galas great in years gone by.

"The Store Treats, precursors of the modern Gala Day, were provided by the Co-operative Store.

"These began in 1910 and lasted until 1956, dying off along with the Co-op’s presence in the town. But while they lasted the Store Treats were the event of the year, a time where families and children came together to celebrate their civic pride and community spirit.

"Perhaps you have memories of the Store Treats? Or even some old photographs tucked away in the loft? Or were you a Gala Queen or Princess back in the day? We’d love to see your old photos, and have you share your memories".
