KELTY athlete Bethany McAndrew will go for gold today (Wednesday) as she takes to the startline for Scotland in an international match.
The talented teenager, who in 2017 competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games, is one of 28 competitors that were selected by Scottish Athletics to compete in the annual Welsh Under-20 International, which is being held at the Cardiff International Sports Campus.
Bethany, who is a member of Pitreavie Amateur Athletics Club in Dunfermline, and who has also represented the University of Edinburgh this year, is joined by club-mates Billy Doyle, Ryan Woods and Jade Hutchison in competing at the meet.
She will compete in both the 110 metre hurdles and the 4x100m women's relay during a competition that also features athletes from Wales, Welsh Schools, three English regions, Northern Ireland and Guernsey.
The former Beath High School pupil will be seeking to continue what has been a promising year – both indoor and outdoor – so far.
Competing in the under-20 age group, she won a silver medal at the Scottish Athletics National Senior and Under-17 Indoor Championships in the women's 60m hurdles, breaking the nine-second barrier with a time of 8.98 seconds, which was followed by a bronze at the Scottish Athletics National Age Group Indoor Championships (9.07).
Bethany was also in action at the Scottish University and College Athletics (SUCA) Indoor Championships in February, in which she improved on her preliminary time to take 60m hurdles gold in 8.93, while also taking long jump silver.
At their outdoor event, she placed second in the 100m hurdles, and was part of the winning 4x100m relay team; claimed top spot in the former event at the Scottish East District Under-13 / Under-15 / Under-17 Championships / Open Meet; and helped Kingdom Athletic – a composite team of under-17 and under-20 athletes from Pitreavie, Fife AC and Dundee Hawkhill Harriers – to their first Upper Youth Development League Northern Premier Division title.
